CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

STATEMENT OF COMMITMENT.

We, at Metropolitan Hospital believe that this CSR document is not merely a statement of intent but one of commitment. We believe in giving back to the community through healthcare empowerment. The ability to live another day is more fundamental than anything!!

We also understand that our business and the surrounding communities are intertwined and that we can play a significant impact on communities as a whole.Nurses At A Free Health Camp

The mandate of this department is to work with the surrounding community by creating awareness on preventable health issues through education seminars and offering free medical check-ups.

We understand that local businesses and communities are closely linked and that we can have a significant impact on communities as a whole.

Our CSR is centered on these core pillars;

1. CHRONIC CARE CLINICS

  • Breast Cancer Clinic (with KEBCOS)

Each year, thousands of Kenyan women are affected by breast cancer which not only impacts the individuals living with the disease, but also their families, friends and loved ones as well. It is in this view that Metropolitan hospital teamed up with Kenya breast cancer outreach support group to offer free screening and sensitize people on these conditions.

  • Onsite VCT Clinic (with MMAAK)

The hospital has partnered with Movement of Men against Aids in Kenya (M.M.A.A.K.), which is an NGO that involves men to take up their role in the fight against HIV and AIDS. MMAK offers;
• FREE on site VCT Clinic
• Psychosocial support
• Home based care management
• Positive Youth Initiative – involves participation of the youth in developing programmes that interest them in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

  • Free HIV Care and Management

The hospital has partnered with Gold Star Network, to offer out – patient care to financially challenged HIV+ persons at minimal cost plus psychosocial support via phone and referral to Gold Star Network psychosocial centres. We have further partnered with Movement of Men against Aids in Kenya (M.M.A.A.K.) to offer on site psychosocial support and home based care management.

The clinic runs every Wednesday from 2 – 5 p.m. and ensures FREE;

  • Laboratory tests – CD4/CD8 counts and PCR for children below 18 years.
  • Anti – Retroviral Treatment (A.R.V.’s)
  • Septrin DS Tablets only (Antibiotic)
  • Anti Tuberculosis (T.B.)
  • Multivitamins
  • Support group activities

2. HEALTH EDUCATION

  • Preventive Health

We educate the public on preventive medicine through lectures and flyers. This is done for FREE to companies, institutions and communities around us and helps inform them of ways that can be used to keep diseases at bay and if sick, the best way to manage.

The following are topics that we cover:-
• Hypertension
• Diabetes
• Hepatitis
• Typhoid
• Kidney failure
• Arthritis
• Nutrition
• Stress management
• HIV-AIDS

3. TRAINEESHIP

We are providing work placements for students either as interns or part of their on going curricula study. We have partnered with Strathmore University to offer placement for their 1st year students as they learn they impact they can make in the community. We have also partnered with Unity College to provide internship programmes for their final year students.

Some have demonstrated exemplary discipline and workmanship such that they secured employment with the hospital.

4. CARING FOR THE LESS FORTUNATE

  • Community Outreach Programmes

                    a) Medical Camps

        This is one of the active aspects in outreach programmes. We give FREE drugs, consultation and medical check up to the less fortunate in society at least twice a year.

        We have so far done one camp in 2009. In early February, we held a camp for the Internally Displaced Persons in Ol Kalau, Nyandarua District. We were able to give services to over one thousand four hundred persons.

Our partners and sponsors were;

• Chem-Labs Limited
• Hope Wild Wide
• Nyahururu private hospital
• Omaera Pharmaceuticals
• GlaxoSmithKline
• Alpha Medical Supplies
• Lords Healthcare
• Hope Wild Wide
• Glen mark Pharmaceuticals
• Nyeri PGH Hospital
• Nakuru PGH Hospital
• Karura CKC Group

b) House visits

 As a way of reaching out to the very sick in society, we have a social outreach team that goes round the neighbouring estate caring for them. Of late with our partnership with Kenya Breast Cancer Outreach Support Group (KEBCOS), we have been reaching out to the cancer victims, doing home visits.

  • Samaritan Fund (Emergency/casualty)

By the virtue of the fact that we are situated in a densely populated area and next to one of busiest highways in Nairobi, Jogoo road, the hospital attends to an average of 1000 emergency cases on yearly basis. This costs the hospital average of Kshs.500, 000.00.

We get critical cases whereby one is unconscious hence unable to pay or identify next of kin. In such instances, we stabilize the patient and transfer to Kenyatta National Hospital and absorb all costs.

  • Free cleft lip and palate surgery (with Smile Train)

A smile is one of the greatest gifts God has given us; it puts a glow on our faces. With Cleft lip and palate condition, one cannot enjoy this gift.

It is in this view that Metropolitan Hospital Nairobi and The Smile Train have partnered to offer free cleft lip and palate surgery to correct the condition, dubbed ‘GIVE A SMILE’.

The cost of operation is shared between Metropolitan Hospital and Smile Train. We have so far operated on over eighty persons since the operation began in 2007.

4. Health Policy Advocacy

  • AKI Service Agreement

The hospital had been at the fore front in championing for a service agreement between service providers and payers. This came about after the collapse of several Health Management Organisations in the early 21st Century.

Many service providers suffered losses since huge debts had to be written off. With the introduction of the service agreement fully backed by Association of Kenya Insurers, cases of payers collapsing and not honouring their debts will be put in check..

The AKI service agreement has been embraced by all payers and service providers and has proven to be a success.

  • Standard coding of health procedures

The hospital is at the forefront in advocating for a standard coding for all hospital services similar to World Health Organisation coding for diseases. This will harmonise operations between payers and service providers.

This CSR Statement is reviwed annually due to the dynamic nature of the healthcare industry.
